What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a web analytics service that provides statistical and basic analytical tools for Search Engine Optimization(SEO) and also for marketing purposes. It is provided by Google and is a part of Google Marketing Platform. Users with a Google account can utilize its resources.
Google Analytics is used to collect visitor statistics and insights, and also to track website performances. It can help organizations determine top sources of user traffic, analyze their success of marketing campaigns, discover any sort of patterns and trends in user engagement and also obtain demographic information's.Working of Google Analytics
Google Analytics acquires user data from each website visitor through the use of page tags. A JavaScript page tag is inserted into the code of each page. This tag runs in the web browser of each visitor, collecting data and sending it to one of Google's data collection servers. Google Analytics can then generate customizable reports to track and visualize data such as the number of users, bounce rates, average session durations, sessions by channel, page views, goal completions and more.
How To Set Up Google Analytics
1. Account Setup
First, go to Google Analytics website and if its your first time, they will ask you to create a new account. Enter your account name and also tick on "Google products & services". Then, click on "Next".
2. Property Setup
In this section, enter your property name and select your country, time zone and also its currency. After doing all the steps, click on "Next".
3. Business Setup
In this section, you need to tailor your experience by answering their questions. First question is about the size of your industry, and your business size and finally, tick all the parameters you intend to with your business.
Finally, once you click on "Create", they will display Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement and you need to accept it.
4. Setting Up Data Stream
After agreeing to their service agreement, it will ask you to choose a platform, such as Web, Android App, and iOS App. Since we are setting it up for a web application, choose "Web".
Enter your website URL, stream name and then, click on "Create Stream".
5. Installation of Tracking Code
After you click on "Create Stream", it will display web stream details. It will also display a notification saying that data collection is not active in the website. In that notification, click on "View tag instructions".
It will show you two options;
- Install with a website builder or CMS
- Install manually.
Depending on the CMS you are using, select the options accordingly. Since I'm using WordPress and intend to install the tracking code manually, I'm selecting the second option.
Copy the given code and paste it in your HTML directory, after the head section. Congrats, you finally installed tracking code for your website and can be tracked in Google Analytics.
